    Basel Arts and Culture

The exhibition presents stick puppets, shadow play figures, glove puppets, and marionettes from across Asia and Europe. The narratives in which they feature are performed not only for entertainment: the figures are identity-shaping and the stories help to explain the vagaries of the world. Puppeteers also make use of the opportunity to educate, to criticize reigning conditions and allude to possible courses of action.

Museum Tinguely: Tadeusz Kantor - Où sont les neiges d’antan

    Basel Arts and Culture

With the exhibition, «Tadeusz Kantor: Où sont les neiges d'antan», Museum Tinguely presents one of Poland’s most important theatre and visual artists of the 20th century with one of his expansive works for the stage. Tadeusz Kantor’s (1915-1990) independent underground theatre, devoted to the reality of everyday life and often critically concerned with Poland's suppressed history, is still influential for a young generation of theatre artists today.

Kunstmuseum Basel: Max Sulzbachner - Moonlit nights and Ruckus in Basel

    Basel Arts and Culture

The Kunstmuseum Basel honors the Basel artist Max Sulzbachner (1904–1985) with a focused retrospective of his eclectic oeuvre and a publication. Kunstmuseum Basel: A Passion for Pictures

    Basel Arts and Culture

Louise Bachofen-Burckhardt (1845–1920) her ambitious objective was a fundamental transformation of the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung: the public art collection of the City of Basel, a treasure of regional significance with an emphasis on art from the Upper Rhine Valley, was to become an institution of European standing on a par with museums she had seen in London, Berlin, and Paris.

Museum der Kulturen Basel: Mother and Child

Museum der Kulturen Basel: Mother and Child

    Basel Arts and Culture

The infant and its parent figure make up an unequal couple. The relationship is subject to intense emotions and cultural norms. Across cultures, different notions of motherhood, ideal parents, and good children inform the image of the two figures. In Christian imagery, the good mother is best represented by the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this regard, the exhibition is a quiet homage to the Basel Minster. Construction on this originally Romanesque church began a thousand years ago in dedication to the Mother of God.

Kunstmuseum Basel: Circular Flow - On the economy of inequality

    Basel Arts and Culture

In the exhibition, economy is also understood as a system that shapes our perception and communication of reality and continuously generates our own images and forms of speech. One concern of the project is to oppose the diagrammatic and model-like perspective with which the economy looks at the world with other types of images.
