A House Full of Stories

A hotel is a place of encounter, where travelers come together and life paths cross. At Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, this has been felt for centuries. Our guestbook reads like a small journey through time: Empress Michiko of Japan, writer James Joyce, and artist Pablo Picasso – they were all guests of our hotel and left their mark here. Welcome to a hotel that blends tradition with hospitality. A place where stories stay alive.

A Grand Hotel – Great Stories

Human beings have always been travellers. Hospitality is deeply rooted in our culture. It is no surprise, then, that history lives on in inns and hotels. The guestbook of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois reads like a who's who of world history. From Empress Michiko of Japan to James Joyce and Pablo Picasso – they were all guests at our house, if only for a while.

1681

First mention of the inn "Drei Könige" (Three Kings).

1754

Innkeeper Johann Christoph Im Hof mounts three wooden king figures on the facade of his inn – a distinctive sign that immediately catches the eye.

1797

While passing through, General Napoléon Bonaparte stops at the "Drei Könige" and is received with a magnificent state reception.

1798

During the French occupation, kings were unwelcome – and so the inn is promptly renamed "Hotel aux trois magots" or "At the Three Figures."

1841

Master tailor Johann Jakob Senn acquires the inn "Drei Könige."

1842

Senn decides to demolish the old inn and commissions the renowned Basel architect Amadeus Merian to design a new building.

1844

On February 16, the new hotel "Des Trois Rois" opens its doors. The elegant structure impresses with its neoclassical simplicity – a masterpiece of harmonious proportions.

1915

The southern part of the hotel at Blumenrain 2 is transferred to the Basler Kantonalbank and converted for its purposes.

1938

The Kantonalbank moves out. The Basel Tourist Office takes over the corner building at Schifflände.

1941

From 1941/42 to 1972: Director Alfred Kienberger shapes the hotel "Drei Könige am Rhein / Hôtel des Trois Rois." With sensitivity and determination, he restores the hotel to international prominence and prestige after the war.

2004

The Thomas Straumann family acquires the "Drei Könige" and the southern section at Blumenrain 2. In close collaboration with Basel architect Christian Lang, the property is extensively restored in line with heritage preservation standards. Certain areas are reconstructed based on the original plans and authentically restored. The corner building at Blumenrain 2 gains additional rooms, a ballroom, and banquet and conference facilities.

2006

The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois opens its doors on March 20.

2023

Start of the comprehensive renovation and extension of the historic head building at Blumenrain 2.

2025

Opening at the new Blumenrain 2 location, featuring a wellbeing area, event spaces, new rooms and suites, the cigar lounge “The Council” designed by Herzog & de Meuron, as well as a new culinary concept.
