Basel, September 19, 2019 – The GaultMillau accolade awarded in Basel on September 9 is yet another highlight in the long history of the venerable Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois. Let’s just remind ourselves how exciting the past few years have been. In 2004 the Straumann family acquired the Grand Hotel and launched an extensive phase of refurbishment and renovation completed in 2006. Since its splendid reopening that same year, the Grand Hotel on the Rhine’s knee has been a continual talking point, with multiple award-winning restaurants and a great of passion and dedication to its guests not just from the region, but from all over the world. And now, we are reaping the rewards.
For the fourth time now, the Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl has seen its three Michelin stars validated. What’s more, Christoph Kokemoor has received the 2019 Sommelier Award, a special award bestowed this year for the first time.
The Grand Hotel picks up yet more awards for the tremendous achievements of its staff.
Last week the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois was honoured with a special award at Château Ferrières-en-Brie just outside Paris: the Prix Villégiature for Europe’s most beautiful city hotel terrace (Meilleure terrasse de ville d’un hôtel en Europe). The hotel terrace overlooking the Rhine was designed by Enzo Enea, one of Europe’s foremost landscape architects, and it prevailed over such serious contenders such as Le Raphaël in Paris and the Four Seasons Hotel at the Bosporus in Istanbul. As a delighted Tanja Wegmann, General Manager, explained at the award ceremony in Paris, ‘it is an invaluable acknowledgement of the efforts made every day by the team at Les Trois Rois to offer our guests only the very best in all areas’. The Basel team together with Livia Leu, Switzerland’s Ambassador to France and daughter of Swiss hotel legend Hans Leu, stepped up to accept the highly coveted award.
Tanja Wegmann is to take up the position of General Manager of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois with effect from 1 March 2018. In her capacity as General Manager she will be in charge of running the Hotel and its restaurants – the Cheval Blanc, Chez Donati and the Brasserie Les Trois Rois – as well as the Fleurs des Rois flower boutique attached to the Hotel. She succeeds Reto Kocher, who is leaving the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois after nine successful years as General Manager.

As a cultural project it’s certainly out of the ordinary. Pupils from two classes at the FG Basel private school have transformed the guest limousine of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois into a graffiti artwork, entirely in keeping with the hotel’s advertising claim: “Rich in history, young at heart”.
For the third time now, the Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl has validated its three Michelin stars. This consistently superlative performance has further enhanced the prominence of Basel’s 3-star restaurant in international haute cuisine.
Head Concierge Cristina Bally of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel certainly swayed the jury of Switzerland’s Sonntagszeitung, which has named her Concierge of the Year. The recognition given to Cristina Bally is one of the legendary hotel ratings awarded by the newspaper in its showcase of Switzerland’s 150 Best Hotels, now in ist sixteenth instalment. The jury included Christoph Ammann, head of the Sonntagszeitung’s travel editorial team, hotel authors Hans Amrein and Karl Wild, and the editor-in-chief of Hotelrevue, Gery Nievergelt.

Peter Knogl awarded his third star in the Michelin Guide – raises Basel into the top category of haute cuisine.
Peter Knogl at the Restaurant Cheval Blanc is the first Chef de Cuisine at a Swiss hotel to be awarded three stars in the Michelin Guide. There are only two other restaurants in Switzerland in this category: the Hôtel de Ville in Crissier and the Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau. This means that the Basel region now has its first three-star restaurant – and that the Cheval Blanc has gained in stature in the world of top international gastronomy.
